New talent nights

New Talent Nights (NTN) is STAG's first show of the year. Designed for new members of the society, it's a fun, fast-paced, friendly production for everyone to get involved in.

Stag nights

STAG-Nights is STAG’s first festival of the year, typically held at the end of November. The three-night festival consists of nine 20-minute plays and installations, centred around a general theme.

mainstage

The Mainstage is the largest STAG production of the year, and directing one is a great opportunity to get practical experience in putting on a relatively large-scale show in a real theatre space.

new works

New Works is STAG’s second festival of the year putting on six shows over a three day period. New Works invites all members of the society to try their hand at writing a completely new and original play. Writers are given the option to create a shorter 20 minute piece or submit a longer 50 minute script. These can be about anything you want, let your imagination run wild!

open slot

The Open Slot is a great opportunity for anyone interested in directing. Open Slot pieces are generally 50 minutes in length, and are typically performed over two nights, however this is flexible. Open Slot productions are usually smaller in scale than our Mainstage productions, but have no limits on creativity and ambition.

acting

Acting in STAG is a fantastic way to get involved in the society and many of our young Fawns first break out into the STAG scene through Acting Particularly in our Freshers only Festival New Talent’s Nights.

Auditions for all of our shows are advertised through our Newsletter and events on Facebook and are open to all regardless of experience or background and to non-members. We also advertise many non-STAG opportunities that we are contacted about. There is a range of productions to get involved with throughout the year for a variety of skill levels. You can also keep an eye out for Audition Workshops which may help you showcase your talent in and out of STAG.

Directing

If being on stage isn’t your thing you might find that you’re more suited to Directing. Directors in STAG are responsible for taking a script and turning it into a performance or sometimes devising material with their group of actors. It’s common in STAG to direct with an Assistant or Co-Director to help share the work out and if you’re new to directing this may be a good place to start.

As a Director there can be a lot you need to think about from Auditions and Call-backs to tech scripts and Get In’s but you’ll have the support of your production team and the board to keep you on track.

If you’ve already been chosen as a Director and have any extra questions it’s a good idea to contact your Festival Director or Production Manager

backstage

Being a Stage Manager for STAG you are responsible for sourcing or purchasing props, costume and set pieces for your performance. You will work with Directors as part of the production team to ensure that everything comes together for the performance(s). Depending on the type of show you’re working on you may get to exercise a great deal of creative ingenuity or have a dig through our treasure trove of a backstage cupboard to find bits and pieces. During the performance you may be required to help move or change set pieces and it’s your job to make sure all the props are in the right place ready for the performers. All of our Stage Manager vacancies are advertised in the Newsletter or on our Facebook Group but if you have any questions you may want to ask direct them to our Backstage Manager at backstage@studenttheatreatglasgow.com .

tech

Being on the tech team is a great way to have creative and practical input on a show in a totally different way. You'll be managing the lights, the sound, the smoke machines, the floodlights, the spots, the dramatic music, and so much more! With a busy but fulfilling tech day and need to go to a minimum of a couple of rehearsals, this is the perfect role for anyone who wants to get involved. Tech may seem daunting and complex but it can be as simple as pressing a button; your friendly neighbourhood tech manager will be there every step of the way to make sure you're comfortable with what you're doing. It's an amazing learning opportunity so definitely give it a try!

workshops

Workshops are one of the ways that STAG Members who aren’t involved in current productions can continue to stay involved. With an increasing amount of industry professionals coming in to run these workshops, these are a great, accessible way for members of STAG to improve their skills.

We like to offer a range of workshops covering the basics such as audition workshops, writing workshops and directing workshops, as well as organising more unique opportunities such as practical talks from industry professionals on how to enter the theatre business, or clowning and physical comedy workshops. With these we hope to offer even our most experienced members something new they can try and above all, have fun with! We always aim to promote an environment that's friendly, open and welcoming to beginners. Workshops are open to members and non members, so even if you're entirely new to STAG and just want to test the water, feel free to come down! Workshops will be announced via our social media as well as our Newsletter.

writing

Writers are hugely important to STAG as all of our opportunities are open to new writing. One of the best ways for new Writers to start out is by submitting their scripts for one of our two festivals. STAG Nights selects 9 20-Minute plays based around a theme and New Works accepts 6 plays, 3 50-Minute and 3 20-Minute Plays. However, writers are also able to submit to our Mainstage and Open Slot performances too. Regardless of what opportunity you apply for you must complete a proposal detailing your vision for the script and any of the Backstage or Technical elements. To help, there’s a proposal guide in the Information and Resources Tab.

the board

Made up of 16 members, the board is responsible for the running of the society.

While each board member has their own distinct duties, the board works together in the interest of the society as whole. All voting members* of the board are involved in decisions ranging from play selection to the organisation of the calendar year.
