Amanda Wingfield an abandoned Southern belle, clings on to her two children; Tom & Laura hoping for stability for one and a suitor for the fragile other. Set in 1937 St. Louis on the eve of the Great Depression and the verge of WWII, we see a setting that has shown nothing but turmoil, economic downfall and war. Tom, who has the soul of a poet is longing for adventure, along with the escape from his mothers suffocating embrace. Laura, to juxtapose finds a level of comfort her mothers frustrations and finds solace within her collection of glass animals - her own menagerie.

When the arrival of a romantic suitor final finally happens, a glimmer of hope is held between the family. But, will Laura’s romantic illusions be shattered?
