WRITE/DIRECT

The best way to keep up-to-date about opportunities for writing or directing is to sign-up to our mailing list; our weekly newsletter sent to your inbox. You can sign-up by entering your email address into the box in the top right-hand corner of this website. Whenever there are proposal deadlines approaching we will advertise them in the newsletter. If you have not seen anything in the newsletter recently, are just curious about opportunities available or have any questions then please email us on: president@studenttheatreatglasgow.com.

You do not have to wait for a particular deadline in the newsletter to propose your writing or to propose a show you wish to direct, to the board. You can propose any time of year by heading to the Propose section here on the website.

DIRECTING:

In STaG a director will propose a production to the board and direct it themselves or sometimes a writer will call for a director to come forward to direct their piece which we would advertise in the newsletter. There are several set projects which STaG produce each year which a director could propose for, such as our mainstage plays, found-spaces, STaG Nights, New Works Festival, New Talent Nights and Studio Slots. You can find out more about these different types of projects Here. Now and again in the newsletter there will be set proposal deadlines announced for these projects, however it is not necessary to wait for these deadlines to be announced. A director can propose at any time throughout the year via the Propose section here on the website.

THE DIRECTOR’S ROLE:

The director leads the actors and pushes the production forward. Often in STaG shows, the director can take on a production-manager role as well as directing, so it can be a big job. The production will be the director’s baby and their vision and the director will have to be very organised as well as supportive and inspiring for the actors. Sometimes an assistant director role can also be assigned. Some budding directors may like to try assistant directing before they choose to direct a production of their own.

WRITING:

There are plenty of opportunities for new writing in STaG. If you have or are writing a script you can propose it to the STaG board by going to the Propose section here on the website. You can propose the piece to be a ‘Studio Slot,’ or ‘Found-Spaces’ piece. You can find out more about these types of productions Here.. Often in the past writers have wanted to direct their piece themselves, but if you would rather we found a director for you then please make this clear on your proposal form. The most exciting opportunity we have for new writers is our ‘New Writing Festival,’ usually held in February each year. The festival is a competition with the winning play being taking to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. You can find out more about the New Writing Festival Here.

WRITING CLUB:

Whether you are a novice who just wants to put pen to paper, or are already working on a new play that will blow us all away, you can join the writing club, every fornightly Tuesday in the STaG Room at 5.30pm. All very informal, tea and biscuits are provided. This is an opportunity for you to try out your ideas and get some inspiration. Not to mention taking part in some great writing exercises like writing with music, automatic writing or writing bits of a text in turn that will help you on your way to creating a masterpiece! The group is the perfect way of sharing ideas, styles, mistakes, and hopefully a lot of chat with other people who are keen on writing.

HOW DO I PROPOSE FOR WRITING OR DIRECTING?

Go to the Propose section here on the website and upload your proposal form. There is an example for reference. Please make it clear which type of project you are applying for (i.e. studio-slot) and if you are a writer please make it clear whether you would like to direct the piece yourself or whether you would prefer us to find you a director. You will receive a confirmation email to confirm that we have received your proposal. You will then likely be invited to an informal chat with the board to discuss your proposal after which the board will make a decision on whether to go ahead with your proposal or not. You should receive feedback on your proposal whether you are accepted or not.
